After the course in Manchester on friday I just thought I would pop in and say 'hi.' I will be starting to deliver the Science Nationals level 2 to a pilot set of low ability year 11 students and will be the only teacher in my school offering this course.
Anyone else in this position? |

Hi CathE,
I'm in a similar position to you, I'm also starting a trial of the course but I start on June 23rd! So I really need to get this sorted. Since you were on a course did anyone happen to mention if there are any text books for this course? I've searched but not found anything.

A couple of people mentioned that there is a set of resources available but that they are very expensive (to my mind anyway).
The Nationals course doesn't really seem to lend itself to text book teaching but no nothing was mentioned.
The course on Friday seemed to be about the administration, it was a generic course aimed at all the subjects (ICT, Science, Art and Design, PE were all there).
I am currently searching for materials I can use online. Once I have started teaching it I will endeavour to share anything I write.
Wherabouts are you? I would love to set up a cluster group but that would obviously necessitate us living in the same area. I am North of Manchester in Bury. |

Hi Cath,
Thanks for your reply. I am doing the same, searching for anything that I can use but not having a huge amount of success. I have been to a school where they are using Nationals and they gave me a couple of powerpoints about how they do it, there isn't a huge amount of detail but they might help you get a idea. If you pm me with your email address I'll send them to you. The cluster group sounds like a good idea, I teach in Rochdale but live in Cheetham Hill so I'm very close by.

My class have just finished researching lab safety and producing a powerpoint which includes coshh regulations, risk assessment, fire regulations, hazcards to name but a few (all at a very basic and cursory level). They have also produced Lab rules posters (I am sure some Y7's could have produced something more professional but I am proud of them anyway).
Next we are moving on to collecting water samples around the building and testing for various things including pH, Cl- Cu2+ Fe++ ions, hardness, and microbial content.
What is everyone else doing at the moment? |

We have run the OCR program for about 3 -4 years now at our school. I'm one of the science technicians who helps research and prepare the lesson and practical, the kids always have so much fun doing the OCR especially forensic science where we set up a crime scene for them to investigate.
We have just started the water testing and sampling unit at the moment with one group and energy efficiency with another group |

| Just wondering why you're teaching to the low ability and not having a mix? |

Hi all - Am also starting course this Sept (Friday !) with Year 10. I have copy of 'Official' Text book - which has the merit that you can use it to set cover from - but wouldn't buy for all students. You can download an ecopy for evaluation at http://www.hoddereducation.co.uk/Schools/Science.aspx I was advised to make sure Dept kept ALL textbooks - because Students can use for research - eg Atomic structure. Dept is also buying 'Dynamic Learning' resource - but not available yet to preview. I too have searched the net with varying success for resources - we have anouther school in the borough (Havering) who are also doing this course who we hope to link up with. Would be happy to share ideas/resources electronically - (as don't live close to Manchester!) . Not sure how to do this though as never used a forum before - so if someone could advise me I'd be happy to let them have my email and perhaps we could start an e-cluster? |
